Hey everyone

Here’s a lesson for beginners on how to play the bass line to Get Up Stand Up by Bob Marley.  The notes are pretty easy – the difficulty is the rhythm.  Especially the triplet rhythm in the verse.  But if you listen closely to the original you should get it.

Here’s the video.

The very first things I learned on bass were the pentatonic minor and pentatonic major scales. I was given a basic knowledge of how to figure out frets = notes on the neck, and I went on from there.
Started jamming, learned how to solo & fill, and now by 4 months I can find the key and scale of a song by ear, solo in various scales, have lots of fun etc.

But my point is that I didn’t learn any songs to start off. I enjoyed learning that way, and profited from it. That’s why I think a bassline this simple is something you should encourage people to improvise against and make up their own grooves, rather than teach it note by note.

Hey Paul you give really great lessons! They are real easy to follow. I was wondering if you can’t post the solo parts to a chick from corea. I’ve always wanted to play that song but some of the solo parts are real fast. Thanks a lot

I understand what you’re saying…but I work a lot with beginners and the biggest frustration that comes over is that they want to play along SONGS. They don’t want to spend time learning theory.

When you were a beginner what did you learn? Songs or scales? And which did you prefer?

I really don’t think it should take 9 minutes to explain this song. This is the kind of thing someone should be able to either pick up on by ear, or learn some theory and then play by ear. A song this basic is not worth going over in such great detail in my opinion.

MarloweDK: Hmm, the link has gone missing, let me locate it and get back to you

Murdy: Hey Marlowe, I bought the L253 in order toget the backing track. However, there is no backing track without the bass. Is there a way to get this?

hank: Thanks Marlowe! I guess I better start saving up. I can't wait to get one. I'm positive if I get one then my playing automatically gets funkier right? :)

MarloweDK: Hank: my sig bass will be presented at the Frankfurt musik messe in march. I dont know of the price but i guess it will be priced in the same range as Sandbergs California models. There is a couple of american retailers, check Sandbergs site.

soporific: Hi guys!

Harry Popper: hi, GospelBassMan

GospelBassMan: Hello community!!

hank: Will your bass be mass produced? Do you think it will be affordable (relatively speaking) Will it be offered online for us Americans that wanna buy it?
