ICMP Scholarship Diary #1

An introduction to my diary as the Music Man Scholarship winner, on the Higher Diploma Bass course at the ICMP (Institute of Contemporary Music Performance) in Kilburn, London.

Through these videos I’ll be sharing some of the ideas and techniques that I’ve been learning during my time at the Institute.

Gm7 practicing impro

Trying to come up with ideas playing over a static Gm7 chord.
Possibilities:
Licks and motifs derived from Gminor dorian, F major scale, Bb lydian, C mixolydian (basically all the different modes of the F major scale)
D minor pentatonic, A minor pentatonic and of course G minor pentatonic.
Tempo is 126bpm and Im over my head in some spots, but its also good to try to play fast sometimes even if you can barely follow the tempo.

L167 Thumb-picking funky E7 bass groove

Im almost only practicing this technique these days, makes playing standard fingerstyle so easy in comparison. It is possible to play this funky groove with standard fingerstyle.

Im using thumb, index and middle fingers only

NB: Just realized that in the slow version, im changing the rhythm a bit on the sliding parts in bars 2 and 4 , please listen to the normal version for correct timing.

New inspiration from new basses

Been kinda busy the last couple of weeks, but today i managed to get a couple of hours with my new shortscale bass strung with piccolo strings (+ 1 octave). With some distortion effects on my Korg PX4d which is a bass AND guitar fx processor, a new world of funky rhythm , slammning hardrock and screaming lead lines, i cant wait to practice some Blackmore, SRV, Jimi… New instruments are new inspiration Speaking of new – in a couple of days a fretless bass should make its way here…. A fellow bass player introduced me to SX basses (my shortscale), very cheap “made in china” basses, but real value for money. The shortscale bass list price is 110$! And even with the additional 90$ in shipping from USA to Denmark its still cheap.
